Registration is now open for the 2011 Mike Rich and Friends present RMHC Golf and Social, scheduled for July 17 and 18. These annual summer events are a great way to support Ronald McDonald House Charities. Every year at the Social, screenwriter and RMHC Board Member Mike Rich hosts a new guest for a discussion about one of his recent films. This year, the film is Secretariat, and the guest is Kate Tweedy, daughter of Secretariat’s owner – Penny Chenery. Join us the following day at our annual Golf Tournament for an amazing day of golf at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, with access to both the public and private courses, followed by dinner on the clubhouse patio.
The youth group from Roseburg Christian Fellowship visited Portland today for a day-long, spring break service project at the East House. The group worked inside and out on a variety of projects, and even brought lunch for families. Thanks to everyone for their support!
Have you ever wondered what happens to all those pull tabs people drop off at the Ronald McDonald House. We resell them to a scrap metal recycler, who picks them up in six giant drums. Today was pull tab pick up day – six drums full of pull tabs went out the door. We wanted to share photos!
Oregon Business Magazine named Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington as one of the Top 100 Green Oregon Businesses today. The winners were chosen from more than 400 Oregon companies who submitted nominations. RMHC has a “Green Team,” made up of staff who brainstorm new ways to make our Houses more environmentally friendly – from energy efficient lighting and appliances, to the recycling center in our newly remodeled kitchen at the East House, to composting leftover food waste. Congratulation to the Green Team!
Susan Starman, Bereavement Coordinator with Adventist Health/Hospice held a Continuing Ed seminar for Ronald McDonald House volunteers last night, giving advice on how to support families who share emotional stories with them at the house. Seminars like this are one way that Ronald McDonald House Charities helps volunteers create a caring environment for guests, while also giving the volunteers advice on how to process their own experiences. Thanks to Susan for volunteering her evening!
RMHC started because one family had a need – one family needed to stay together when their little girl was sick in the hospital. Today we remember Kim Hill and send our thoughts and prayers to our first family – the Hill family.
Our friends at the Grand Central Bakery on NE Fremont have begun donating weekly pastry boxes to the East House. A fresh box of pastries is waiting every Monday when our Events Manager Kate Bowman stops in for her morning coffee. The pastries are much appreciated and make a perfect snack for families at the house!
Our guests can now travel to Outer Space thanks to internet marketing firm NetBiz, who adopted Room 114 at the East House and reopened it today with a ribbon cutting celebration. Employees had spent the last several weekends at the House to get the room ready. Click on the gallery below to see photos of the room.
